A Coreia do Norte intensificou as tensões na região ao realizar mais de 60 disparos de artilharia na área noroeste da Ilha de Yeonpyeong, que é parte do território sul-coreano e está localizada no Mar Amarelo. A artilharia lançada pela Coreia do Norte caíram ao norte da Linha de Limite do Norte (NLL), que é uma fronteira marítima disputada entre as duas Coreias. Em resposta aos ataques do primeiro dia, as forças armadas sul-coreanas realizaram cerca de 400 disparos, o dobro do número disparado pelo Norte. No entanto, optaram por não realizar disparos de retaliação no segundo dia.
O Estado-Maior Conjunto da Coreia do Sul expressou uma forte condenação às ações da Coreia do Norte, caracterizando-as como uma ameaça à paz e à estabilidade na Península Coreana.
